Financial Controller Soo Mill and Lumber Company Limited

Location: Sault Ste. Marie, ON Soo Mill and Lumber Company Limited is seeking an experienced Controller to join our team.

As the Controller, you will be responsible for all financial and accounting functions for the company. This includes the formulation and administration of finance and accounting practices throughout the corporation to ensure that accounting, financial and operating reports accurately reflect the condition of the business and provide managers with reliable information necessary to control operations.

This position reports directly to the President at our Sault Ste. Marie location, and will be responsible for overseeing Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll and Pension Administration.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for maintaining and ensuring compliance with company accounting standards, policies and procedures
  • Monitors cash flow requirements
  • Supervises the maintenance of company general ledgers
  • Prepares company operating and financial statements
  • Manages the production of the annual budget, reviews monthly expenditures and ensures that budgetary goals are met.
  • Comply with local, provincial and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Works with I.T. Manager to ensure computer operations are compatible with accounting and financial standards
  • Ensures that accounts payable are paid on a timely basis
  • Ensures that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Responsible for administration of the Company’s pension plans
  • Supervision of payroll and benefits processing
  • Negotiates renewal of insurance and employee benefits
  • Oversees reconciliation of bank statements
  • Key point of contact with auditors on all technical accounting issues, and provide assistance/support for audits of such issues

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified General Accountant (CGA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Chartered Accountant (CA) designations.
  • Previous audit, accounting and tax experience in Canadian jurisdictions
  • Experience developing budgets and tracking expenses
  • Experience as an operations-oriented accountant
  • Organized, critical thinking ability and a problem solver
